Cleaning 15 years’ worth of congealed oil and water off all substrates was the biggest challenge. For waterproofing slurries to bond, substrates must be 100% free of dust, dirt and oil.

It took several days of high-power washing, scrubbing with detergents and hoovering of the space before it was ready for waterproofing.

As the factory was still working, all works had to be carried out at the weekends.

Project Details

At the large United Biscuit factory, where bagged foods such as crisps and biscuits are produced, an internal lift pit had been subject to a hydraulic oil leak for around 15 years, with water ingress mixing with the oil to make an incredibly thick and dirty black film on all surfaces.

Beautiful Basements was brought on board to solve the water ingress problem.

All the surfaces were extensively cleaned and prepared ready for waterproofing. In a series of stages, the walls and floor were repaired and primed using Koster Aquatecnic waterproofing slurries. The waterproofing consisted of 3 coats of waterproofing slurry and finished with an oil resistant wearing coat to prevent oil breaking the slurry down.
